Room 9

Classical Weimar

Portrait of Goethe in old age by Johann Joseph Schmeller
between Christian Friedrich Tieck's busts of the ducal family

The time following Goethe's return from Italy, known as "Weimar Classic", is characterized by his friendship with fellow poet Schiller. Weimar had become under Duke Carl August an important cultural centre, primarily associated with the names of Goethe, Schiller, Herder and Wieland. Renowned artists and architects are drawn into the Weimar court too, in connection with the new palace buildings.

The portrait by J. J. Schmeller of Goethe in old age with a writing tablet is the Museum's oldest possession.
