Entrance Hall

Entrance Hall

Coming from the courtyard with its old well, you enter the house by the back door. Facing you is the main entrance on Großer Hirschgraben; from the street, Johann Caspar Goethe's coat of arms with its three lyres can be seen above it. The trapdoor in front leads (as does another under the stairs) to the two vaulted wine and storage cellars. The hallway houses a Frankfurt cupboard and a strongbox, in which valuables could be swiftly taken out of the house in an emergency. The clock comes from the workshop of a Goethe family relative.
