Blue Room

The Blue Room

The dining room with its richly carved baroque mirror is done in 'bleumourant' (literally 'dying blue'), a fashionable colour of the time. The fair copy of Goethe's "Götz von Berlichingen" was made at the round dining table. On the wall is the remnant of an oilcloth wallpaper from the old house, that by Goethe's account was stretched over the children's beds in the attic storey to protect from rain during renovations. The pillow-lace cushion by the window reminds us that Goethe's mother was a keen lace maker. The glass-fronted corner cupboard displays Rococo period porcelain from, among others, the Höchst factory.
