Peking

Peking

The stylishly furnished first floor was used for family parties and important visits. The wallpaper in "Peking" Рor the Red Room, as it was also called because of its crimson silk fabric Рreflects the 18th century fashion for Chinoiserie. During the Seven Years' War, much to the annoyance of Goethe's father who was politically on the side of the Prussians, the French governor Thoranc was billeted here; his portrait is in the North Gallery. The portrait of Goethe's grandfather, Stadtschultheiß (mayor) Textor forms the focal point there. It is flanked by two still lifes by the Frankfurt painter Justus Juncker. A further portrait depicts Goethe's grandmother Textor.
