Room 5

Goethe's early Weimar years

Johann Ernst Heinsius: Duke Carl August of Saxe-Weimar, 1781

In November 1775 Goethe accepts the invitation to court from the eighteen-year-old Duke Carl August of Saxe-Weimar, who draws the famous young poet into his inner circle of personnel. The small ducal court at Weimar has a lively cultural life that radiates from the Dowager Duchess Anna Amalia's legendary "Court of the Muses".

Georg Melchior Kraus: Je suis C, 1788

A picture by J. G. Ziesenis shows her as a music-lover seated at the harpsichord, between the portraits of her two sons. The portrait of a lady by G. M. Kraus is thought to be of Charlotte von Stein, of whom Goethe says: "She sees the world as it is, yet through the medium of love".
